Virtual phone numbers in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the destinations where we can offer all three formats at the same time: local voice numbers in named cities, mobile numbers that only receive SMS, and a national toll-free line. All of them are dialled under country code 60. The choice between them depends less on price than on the paperwork each format requires, and in Malaysia the difference in paperwork is unusually large.

Local voice numbers in Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang

Three Malaysian cities are covered by our voice inventory. Kuala Lumpur uses area code 3, Johor uses 7 and Penang uses 4, so a full number begins 60 3, 60 7 or 60 4. Pricing is identical in all three cities: 50 USD to set up the number and 30 USD per month to keep it. There is no price advantage in picking one city over another, so the decision is purely about which city your callers expect to see. These are local voice numbers, intended for receiving calls rather than text messages.

Mobile numbers for SMS registration

Malaysian registration numbers are issued on the mobile prefixes 10, 11 and 123. They cost 20 USD to set up and 22 USD per month, which makes them the cheapest Malaysian option in both respects. They receive text messages only. They do not take calls, so a service that verifies you by voice call instead of SMS will not work on this type. If your use case is signing up for online services and receiving one-time codes, this is the format to look at, and our page on SMS numbers explains how they behave.

The 1800 toll-free line

Malaysia has one toll-free range available, the 1800 range. Setup is 80 USD, the highest of the three Malaysian formats, but the monthly fee is 30 USD, the same as a city voice number. So the toll-free line is expensive to start and no more expensive to keep than a Kuala Lumpur number.

What documents are needed

  • Voice numbers in Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang are available to companies only. You must supply a company name, a certificate of incorporation, a full name, a contact phone number, a passport or national ID, an address inside Malaysia and proof of that address. The in-country address is the requirement that stops most applications, so check it before you order.
  • SMS registration numbers require no documents at all.
  • The 1800 toll-free number is open to individuals as well as companies. It asks for a full name, a contact phone number, a passport or national ID and a postal address, plus company name and certificate of incorporation from companies, and a description of how the number will be used.

In practice this splits Malaysian buyers into two groups. Anyone without a registered Malaysian business address is limited to the SMS number or the toll-free line. A company already operating in Malaysia can take a city number and present a familiar local code to customers. Ordering is not instant in any case: activation can take up to 24 hours after the documents are accepted. If you want a number you will keep for years rather than for a single sign-up, read about our permanent virtual numbers first.

FAQ

The “For registration” label indicates that there are no restrictions on receiving SMS with these numbers, and they can receive the same SMS as regular SIM cards. However, we cannot guarantee SMS delivery from all services, as this is beyond our control. For instance, we have no influence over services like Google, which may not accept UK numbers (+447XXXXXXXX) for account registration.

Additionally, due to recent restrictions imposed by Twitter, we cannot guarantee SMS delivery from this service to any of our numbers.

You can have your SMS forwarded for free to an email address or via HTTP(s) (you can also receive SMS in Telegram via webhook). Forwarding to a mobile phone number is available, but for an additional fee.

Yes, the number will remain yours as long as you continue paying the monthly fee. However, if you stop paying, the number will be deleted, and we cannot guarantee that the same number will be reactivated.

Receiving SMS and calls from online services (like WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, etc.), as well as from banks, payment platforms, and international numbers, is not guaranteed with numbers that don’t have the “For registration” label.

These numbers can receive SMS from online services. If you specifically need them for registration purposes, we recommend using numbers labeled “For registration.”

Most numbers that do not require documents connect immediately (if not stated otherwise).

You can receive messages to your mailbox, to the phone number or to http.

No limits on incoming messages.

While purchasing a number, pay attention on it’s description. Number mentioned as SMS ONLY will not be able to receive calls. If the number offers to set both calls and SMS forwarding while purchasing, it means it can receive calls as well as messages.

Yes you can but not all SMS numbers provide such a service. Please choose a number that has a ‘for registration’ label or use disposable SMS service.
