Virtual phone numbers for Japan
Japan is a toll-free-only country on Telnum. There is one product available: a Japanese toll-free number under country prefix 81. We do not sell Japanese city landline numbers here, and we do not sell Japanese numbers that receive SMS. If either of those is what you came for, this is the wrong page, and the sections below explain where to go instead.
Two code ranges, one price
Japanese toll-free inventory is split across two code ranges, 120 and 800. Both are toll-free ranges and both cost the same: 80 USD to set up and 80 USD per month. Japan is one of the more expensive destinations in our catalogue, and the monthly fee does not drop after the first month. Calculate the full year before you order, because a Japanese toll-free line is a recurring commitment rather than a one-off purchase. Compare the figure against other markets on the country list if budget is the deciding factor.
Documents you must have ready
Japanese toll-free numbers are available to companies only. A private buyer cannot order one, no matter the intended use. The requirement list combines corporate paperwork with an identity check on the person placing the order, so you will need documents from both sides:
- Certificate of incorporation for the company that will hold the number
- Full name of the person ordering
- A passport or national ID for that person
- A postal address
- A contact phone number
The passport or national ID is the part buyers most often overlook. A registered company alone is not enough for Japan; an individual document must accompany it.
How long the order actually takes
Because every Japanese order is document-checked, this is not a same-minute purchase. Activation can take up to 24 hours once the paperwork is accepted, and the check itself adds time before that clock starts. If a scan is unreadable, or the company name on the certificate does not match the name on the order, the request goes back to you and the wait restarts. Gathering all five items before you order is the single thing that shortens the process most.
What a Japanese toll-free number is for
The realistic buyer is a company that sells into Japan and wants callers in Japan to reach support or sales without paying for the call. Calls arrive over the internet and can be answered anywhere your team works. The number is a customer-facing entry point, published on a website, an invoice, or packaging. If that describes your case, read the toll-free numbers page for how the service is delivered.
Do not buy this for verification codes
Many people search for a Japanese number in order to register an account or receive a one-time code. A toll-free number cannot do that. It does not receive SMS, so no verification message will ever arrive on it. Spending 80 USD to find that out is an expensive mistake. If you need to receive text messages, start at SMS numbers and check which countries have SMS-capable inventory. If you only need a code once, look at a disposable number instead.
FAQ
The “For registration” label indicates that there are no restrictions on receiving SMS with these numbers, and they can receive the same SMS as regular SIM cards. However, we cannot guarantee SMS delivery from all services, as this is beyond our control. For instance, we have no influence over services like Google, which may not accept UK numbers (+447XXXXXXXX) for account registration.
Additionally, due to recent restrictions imposed by Twitter, we cannot guarantee SMS delivery from this service to any of our numbers.
You can have your SMS forwarded for free to an email address or via HTTP(s) (you can also receive SMS in Telegram via webhook). Forwarding to a mobile phone number is available, but for an additional fee.
Yes, the number will remain yours as long as you continue paying the monthly fee. However, if you stop paying, the number will be deleted, and we cannot guarantee that the same number will be reactivated.
Receiving SMS and calls from online services (like WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, etc.), as well as from banks, payment platforms, and international numbers, is not guaranteed with numbers that don’t have the “For registration” label.
These numbers can receive SMS from online services. If you specifically need them for registration purposes, we recommend using numbers labeled “For registration.”
Most numbers that do not require documents connect immediately (if not stated otherwise).
You can receive messages to your mailbox, to the phone number or to http.
No limits on incoming messages.
While purchasing a number, pay attention on it’s description. Number mentioned as SMS ONLY will not be able to receive calls. If the number offers to set both calls and SMS forwarding while purchasing, it means it can receive calls as well as messages.
Yes you can but not all SMS numbers provide such a service. Please choose a number that has a ‘for registration’ label or use disposable SMS service.
